It's exactly how it sounds.

So, I saw The Great Gatsby last week

It was a great movie. Nothing wrong there. However, the reaction to one of the delivered lines was what I had a problem with. At one point, when Tom Buchanan is insulting Wolfshiem, he calls him a kike. I audibly gasped, not used to hearing the term aloud, but the rest of the theatre remained silent. I even turned around to see if I could spot even vague discomfort on anyone’s face. But, no. Either no one in this day and age knows the term, or people just don’t find it to be offensive. Both of these points are an issue.

Now, if you’re not familiar with the word, “kike” is a derogatory term used to describe Jewish people. It’s like using the n-word in reference to a black person. 

If people simply don’t know the word or don’t know what it is, then it’s problematic in the way that people are not being objectively educated about Jewish history, or just general cultural history, in school like they should.

If your excuse is, “Oh, well Jewish people weren’t treated nearly as badly as black people were, so the word isn’t as bad,” then you’re fucking wrong. Were Jews enslaved? Yeah, actually. Ever seen Prince Of Egypt? That shit ain’t just good storytelling. More recently, you ask? How about Hitler’s reign. You think Jews in concentration camps just sat around waiting to be killed? No. If they were able, they were enslaved. They were forced to produce normal German goods like clothes, jewelry, etc. They were forced labourers. Sound familiar? Just because you can’t necessarily pick out a Jewish person from a line-up doesn’t mean they can’t or aren’t discriminated against. I have personally had experiences where friends distanced themselves when they discovered that my family is Jewish. 

Out of every single social justice post that defends a group of people that I have seen, none of them have once mentioned Jewish people as an oppressed group.

It all matters. All that history matters. It doesn’t go away. The hate is still here, as it is for all other oppressed people; it’s just a little easier to hide.

so this 8th grade girl is supposed to come to my parent’s house tomorrow cuz she’s gonna be taking care of my mum’s dog next weekend, and tomorrow is the day where i’ll be testing out all my cosplays and how everything works and alterations and stuff so i don’t have to do it in my dorm room. so while this twelve-year-old is in my house, i’ll be in various states of cross/cosplay. i wonder how this is gonna turn out.
